WHASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSUP?
Who am I? hmmn! A challenging question! How would I describe myself? Well, Well. I am Michael, born March 29, 1936, a white bearded older American, teaching in China from 2001-09 and again in 2011, much too tall for many Chinese doors (one meter.95), and weighing too much for some small Chinese chairs. I might best be seen perhaps as a father of 3, Michelle, Leo, and Louis, and grandfather of 9, Christine, Elizabeth, Mary Catherine Rose; Darya, Sanders, Sophia; and Conner Michael, Jordan, and Luke. My family is very important to me. Imagine if my 9 grandchildren each have 3 children! Then I would be a great grandfather of 27, and if they all have 3 children, I would be the great great grandfather of 81 children. My own dynasty!
I am also one of the “fathers” of the field of intercultural communication which we began as a formal field of study in the early 1970s. It is now studied in many different countries, including China since the 1990′s. I have been the host father of high school exchange students: Bjorn Olof (Sweden; he and his wife are deceased); Jean-Louis Dislaire (Belgium–he has two daughters); Nicolas Dislaire (France); Ze Fogaca (Brazil); Pablo Alonso (Spain); Bernard Arthur (South Africa); and we brought home two young men from Swaziland for further education (Amariah Mbuyisa–now living in the US and has two daughters and Paulos Dlamini). I was also the host father for a refugee boy from El Salvador (Tulio).
Also, a few years ago, because of my heavy involvement in the South Sudan community in Rochester New York , I used to be called the “father” of the South Sudan community there. In fact, I had several Sudanese friends who lived with me there. One, Reat Tuany, who has two daughters, returned to Sudan and ran unsuccessfully for Parliament. He and several of my other Sudanese friends have returned to South Sudan to try to create a new country, South Sudan.
I have been a university professor of communication and English for more than 47years (plus 3 years teaching Latin to junior middle school students at the beginning of my career), having taught university students in the US , Canada , Swaziland as a Fulbright Professor, and China where I have taught more than 8800 students in North America and more than 2200 degree credit students in China and have addressed more than 8800 Chinese secondary and university students in public lectures and lecture series. I have also given lectures and lecture series in Cambodia, Canada, Germany, India, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
I am the editor or author of ten books in the US and five books in China on rhetoric and public discourse, intercultural and international communication and media, and the United Nations. (These books are included in my April, 2011 resume in the website.) I was the founding series editor for Ablex Publishing Co./Praeger/Greenwood Publishing Group’s “Civic Discourse for the Third Millennium” series with 18 books published on various intercultural and international issues between 1998 and 2004, several of which won national awards in the US.
I have chaired nearly a dozen US and international conferences on intercultural and international communication. Between 1984 and 1986 I was president of the International Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research. More recently, I have been a keynoter for
more than a dozen Chinese communication conferences. CCTV Internaional “Dialogue” program interviewed me a dozen times; in July, 2005 I was featured in China Talents Semimonthly (in Chinese); I wrote eight feture articles for New Oriental Magazine; “Culture Matters” Shanghai International Channel featured me four times on the topic of “intercultural friendship” and I was a frequent interviewee on China Radio International’s “People in the Know” program. Now, I am living in Charlottesville, Virginia, and learning to be a good grandfather.
I have enjoyed being a world traveler with 62 countries visited so far. I first began traveling in the US and Canada with my parents as a teenager. When I was 22, I traveled in 12 European countries, and the following summer again to Europe and to Russia with a return visit 30 years later and also in 2005, 2006 and 2008. I have never stopped since with visits to western and central Europe, the Middle East, Central America Latin America, and Asia . In Asia, I
have visited India (2 times), Japan (2 times), Malaysia , Singapore (2 times) , South Korea (2 times), Vietnam and Cambodia (2 times), Thailand, and Indonesia. I have also traveled
widely in China , visiting more than 32 cities in the south east, south west, east, and north east. I would like to travel all the way to the west, Urumqi in the Xingjiang Autonomous Region.
In China , I have taught in Yangzhou University in 2001-2002, Beijing Language and Culture University from 2002 to 2005., Shanghai International Studies University, 2005-09, and at Ocean University of China in 2011. I have taught many classes of children: elementary school, middle school, and even kindergarten. My interest in youth has a special emphasis as a friend and congenial host for international young people from various countries and now especially in China . I have been an amateur singer of American, Christmas, and religious music and with other foreign faculty and foreign and Chinese students, we gave five concerts at the Beijing Language and Culture University in 2003 and 2004 plus an annual Christmas lecture/concert at SISU for four years at SISU.
Some in China call me a “lovely old man.” Most just call me “Michael.” Some see me as a sort of grandfather figure. Some think that with my white beard I look like Karl Marx or Charles Darwin. Many Chinese call me “Father Christmas” or “Santa Claus.” At Christmas, I have served several times in China as Santa Claus for university and school celebrations.
Where am I going? Forward! Hopefully, more travel; probably more public lectures; why not more teaching? Definitely more young Chinese friends. What do I consider the most important value? happiness. I wish it for all of you who view this website. Good health is also important. Aristotle tells us that to reach happiness, one must have a good familiy, good children, good community, good education, good health, sufficient wealth for one’s station in life, and respect for one’s country. I have been blessed with these and other foundations for happiness. My favorite secular quote is from Socrates: “I am neither a citizen of Athens, nor of Greece, but of the World!” That’s a good goal for my future (and yours). My favorite religious quote is from Jesus’ sermon on the mount, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.”
