Some books that have touched/helped me develop as an individual. As a Roman Catholic Christian, the Bible is naturally at the top of the list, and in that collection of books, the New Testament would be most important for me. At Mass on Sundays, we have weekly coordinated readings from the Old Testament, one of the 150 psalms, a reading typically from the letters, especially of St. Paul, and a reading from one of the 4 Gospels. Second for me would be the complete collection of Shakespeare which I have with me also in China.. Starting in high school, I have probably seen at least two do[......]

The Communication Field Reaching Out to International Scholars: Michael H. Prosser, Ph.D. [Post 63]

Reaching out to International ScholarsMichael Prosser (michaelhprosser@yahoo.com) In Dan O'Hair's NCA presidential column in Spectra for June and July, 2006, he calls for "Reaching out to our international colleagues." He correctly notes that NCA’s outreach is limited because of such conditions as its name, one incidentally, which ICA used before it became the International Communication Association. He also notes that NCA has never had a conference outside the United States. When Bill Howell was an officer in the late 1960's, he made powerful arguments for holding the fi[......]

Meeting China’s People for the First TimeMichael Prosser In Yangzhou in 2001-2002, my first Chinese living experience, I was delighted to meet my students, some who became very good friends. On the streets, friendly young teenagers would say, "'Hello, how are you? I am fine, thankyou, and you?" I began to call Yangzhou the "hello" city because so many young people greeted me in this way. Foreigners were not so unusual there as in other smaller cities that I visited in China during my first year. I became a friend of an 11 year old boy whose father had a photo shop near[......]

China Continuing: Power and Control of China’s Internet and Instant Messages In 2001, there were 80 million internet users in China; now in 2006, there are 111 million users. We can expect this number to increase by another 30 million within the next two or three years. Additionally, there are now 450 million mobile phone users in China, and about 300 million wired phones. More than 2 billion short or instant messages are now sent every year, with the daily average received and sent in the range of thirty for many young university, college, and even secondary students. This exponential gro[......]
